Rotational Supervisor ResponsibilitiesSupervisors of rotational assignments play a very important role in the Intern's development. In conjunction with the interns, supervisors should design an assignment that provides the optimum amount of exposure to key elements of the position. Actual on-the-job experience, shadowing the supervisor, attending key IC or NIH meetings, and specific job-related courses all play important roles in achieving a successful assignment. Documentation of the assignment may be as formal or as informal as the rotational supervisor and Intern require. However, both should have a clear understanding in advance of the expectations, goals, and timing of the assignment; written documentation enhances this process and is strongly encouraged. Interns should inform assignment supervisors that they have responsibility for preparing an assessment of the Intern's performance at the conclusion of the assignment, which will be used by the Mentor in completing the Intern's annual performance evaluation.
